a ”Status of Residence”

"Status of Residence" to study and work in Japan

"Status of Residence" refers to the commonly referred "Working Visa".
Here are some typical "Status of Residence" permission criteria.
However, please understand that you may not be permitted in order to judge your situation comprehensively even if the following criteria are met.
For that, the important point is whether you are able to collect and submit documents that can clearly prove that you meet the required criteria.

Also, if you want to educate your children in Japan, you will need to have some knowledge of the basic conditions of "Status of Residence" to be adapted to study abroad.
In that case, the following information should be useful.

【 Items required for application 】

If you wish to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility for Residence, the following submission is required.
Ⅰ. Application documents that match the application for each job type (or student) specified by the Regional Immigration Office.
Ⅱ. 2 photos of your face sharpening (without hat, without background);
Photo size is 40 mm long and 30 mm wide.
Ⅲ. Attaching the Certificates of "Your Ability".

Activities Category	Permission Criteria Period of Stay
College Student (Ⅰ～Ⅵ)	Ⅰ. The applicant must fall under any of the following categories.
	(a) The Applicant must have graduated from the following educational institutions. A college or an equivalent educational institution, a specialized course of study at an advanced vocational school, an educational institution designated for preparing persons who have completed 12 years of education at a school in a foreign county to enter a college, etc. but, only night school or correspondence course is not permitted.	(b) Those who wish to enroll in a Japanese university and take part in the courses offered by the graduate school at night.
	Ⅱ. Applicants need to prove that they have sufficient funds for living in Japan. If someone else is responsible for spending on behalf of the applicant, the applicant need to prove their property etc and personal relationships.
	Ⅲ. If the applicant is going to attend courses as a research student or auditor who is to study solely by auditing, the applicant must be enrolled as such based on some form of examination by the authorities of the educational institution concerned.And the applicant must attend that courses at least 10 hours a week.
	Ⅳ. If the applicant intends to take a specialized course at a technical college (except for Japanese only), the following requirements must be fulfilled:
	(a) The Applicant must have studied Japanese for at least 6 months at any of the Japanese language educational institutions designated by the Minister of Justice at the time of publication, and prove that.	(b) It is necessary for the relevant technical college to have a dedicated international student advisor who supports the foreign student's life in Japan.
	ⅴ. If the applicant want to study only Japanese in specialized courses at a technical college ,which must be one of the Japanese language institutions designated by the Minister of Justice.
	Ⅵ. If the applicant want to study at an educational institution that specializes in bringing a person who has graduated 12 years of education at a foreign school to a Japanese university, same as above, which must be one of the institutions designated by the Minister of Justice.
	【 Documents to be attached 】 Ⅰ. Copy of the admission letter of the educational institution where the applicant intends to receive education,etc. Ⅱ. All expenses (including education , housing, other living expenses) during residency Document that proves the ability of you having. Pre-college Student (Ⅰ～Ⅵ)	Ⅰ. The target applicants are those who need to be educated at a high school, special education school, senior vocational school high school or general course, or a vocational school or other educational institution. However, applicants who study at night school or correspondence course only are excluded.
	Ⅱ. Applicants need to prove that they have sufficient funds for living in Japan. If someone else is responsible for spending on behalf of the applicant, the applicant need to prove their property etc and personal relationships.
	Ⅲ. There are the following conditions when the applicant want to attend an upper secondary school: ● The applicant must be 20 years of age or under and must have studied the Japanese language or have studied in the Japanese language for at least 1 year at an educational institution. *This condition is excluded if the applicant is permitted to study abroad based on a foreign exchange program of the national government, a local government, incorporated administrative agency, educational foundation or public interest corporation, etc. or an equivalent international exchange program.
	Ⅳ. If the applicant wants to study at a higher or general course of study at an advanced vocational school, or at a vocational school (except for study solely of the Japanese language), both of the following requirements are to be fulfilled. but, this is not the case if the applicant is to study at an educational institution established for the admission of a significant number of foreigners from abroad and offering primary or secondary education in foreign languages. a) There is no need to meet.
	(a) The Applicant must have studied Japanese for at least 6 months at any of the Japanese language educational institutions designated by the Minister of Justice at the time of publication, and prove that., And applicants must prove through some form of examination that they have a skill to sufficiently understand the Japanese language to pursue a course of study at an advanced vocational school or other vocational school or he have studied for at least 1 year at a schools.	(b) It is necessary for the advanced vocational school or the vocational school concerned to have a dedicated international student advisor who supports the foreign student's life in Japan.
	Ⅴ. If the applicant wants to study at an educational institution equivalent to a vocational school in its facilities and curriculum (except for study solely of the Japanese language), those facilities must be designated by the Minister of Justice in a public notice.
	Ⅵ. If the applicant wants to study solely the Japanese language in a higher or general course of study at an advanced vocational school, at a vocational school, or at an educational institution equivalent to a vocational school in its facilities and curriculum, the educational institution, those must be one of the Japanese language institutions designated by the Minister of Justice in a public notice.

Engineer (Ⅰ～Ⅱ)	The basic requirement is that all the following requirements are met: But these conditions are exempted if you are engaged in work requiring information processing skills or knowledge and pass the examination of information processing skills specified by the Minister of Justice or defined in the law. In addition, if you have acquired the information processing technology qualification specified by the Minister of Justice, the requirements shown in (i) are exempted.
	Ⅰ. The applicant must have graduated from a college or have completed a course in a college or acquired equivalent education majoring in a subject pertaining to the skills or knowledge necessary for performing the services concerned. Or the applicant must have work experiences at least 10 years.
	Ⅱ. The applicant must be promised by the place of work to receive a higher level of compensation than the compensation that would be received if the Japanese performed the same job.

Specialist in Humanities/ International Services (Ⅰ～Ⅲ)	The basic requirement is that all the following requirements are met:
	Ⅰ. If the applicant engages in a services that require knowledge in the humanities who must have graduated from a college or have completed a course in a college or acquired equivalent education majoring in a subject pertaining to the knowledge necessary for performing the services concerned. Or the applicant must have work experiences at least 10 years.
	Ⅱ. If the applicant engages in a service that requires a particular idea or sensibility based on experience in a foreign culture, all of the following requirements must be met:
	(a) The applicant must engage in translation, interpretation, instruction in languages, public relations, overseas transactions, fashion or interior design, product development or other similar work.	(b) The applicant must have work experiences at least 3 years in the relevant services. But if the applicant graduated from a college and wants to engage in translation, interpreting or teaching in language, the above requirements are exempted.
	Ⅲ. The applicant must be promised by the place of work to receive a higher level of compensation than the compensation that would be received if the Japanese performed the same job.
	【 Documents to be attached 】 Ⅰ. Copy of corporate register copy and copy of profit and loss statement of the company you plan to work for. Ⅱ. Material showing the business content of the company. Ⅲ. Instructor (Ⅰ～Ⅱ)	Ⅰ. If the applicant wishes to engage in an educational activity that provides education at various schools and similar educational institutions (Japanese elementary schools, junior high schools, high schools, secondary education schools, schools for the blind, schools for the deaf, nursing schools, etc). Or, if the applicant wishes to engage in an educational activity at an above educational institution as a temporary worker, etc other than a regular teacher, the applicant must meet both of the following conditions: However, if the applicant is a teacher for educational institutions dedicated to people other than Japanese in Japan, only (1) is required.
	(a) The applicant must have graduated from a college or have completed a course in a college or acquired equivalent education. Or the applicant must hold a license to teach the subject who intends to teach in Japan.	(b) If the applicant intends to be a foreign language teacher in Japan, the applicant must have been educated in that language for at least 12 years. If the applicant intends to be a teacher teaching other subjects in Japn, the applicant must have at least 5 years of teaching experience with that subject.
	Ⅱ. The applicant must be promised by the place of work to receive a higher level of compensation than the compensation that would be received if the Japanese performed the same job.

Skilled Laborer (Ⅰ～　)	The applicant must fall under any of the following categories. And the applicant must be promised by the place of work to receive a higher level of compensation than the compensation that would be received if the Japanese performed the same job.
	Ⅰ. The applicant must be a person involved in the preparation of food or food production, which requires skills devised in countries other than Japan, and must fall under any of the following:
	(a) The applicant must have work experience related such skills at least 10 years. (However, including the period of time spent studying at an educational institution in a foreign country while majoring in the skills concerned)	(b) A person to whom the agreement between Japan and the Kingdom of Thailand for economic partnership is applied.
	Ⅱ. The applicant is required to have at least 10 years of experience in the field of construction or civil engineering specific to foreign countries outside Japan and to try to engage in services that require such skills. But, includes time spent studying at a foreign educational institution to acquire the above skills. Or, if the applicant plans to engage in services under the guidance of a business associate with at least 10 years of experience, the number of years of experience required will be reduced to 5 years.
	Ⅲ. The applicants is required to have at least three years of sports instruction experience. Competing in such skills or international events such as the Olympics and World Championships It is necessary to be engaged in services that require such skills in the teaching of sports.

Intra- Company Transferee (Ⅰ～Ⅱ)	The applicant is all of the following requirements must be met
	Ⅰ. The applicant is required to have worked at a sales office, including a head office located outside Japan, for at least one year before being transferred to Japan.
	Ⅱ. The applicant must be promised by the place of work to receive a higher level of compensation than the compensation that would be received if the Japanese performed the same job.

Investor/ Business Manager (Ⅰ～Ⅲ)	Ⅰ. If the applicant intends to start international trade and other operations in Japan, the following requirements must be met:
	(a) Facilities to be used as the office of the project must be secured in Japan.	(b) The applicant is required to have ２ or more full-time employees who live in Japan work in addition to the applicant. Target audience: Japanese or permanent resident, Japanese spouse, permanent resident spouse, etc.
	Ⅱ. Applicants in the following situations are required to clear all of the following columns in order to obtain status of residence: When the applicant invests in international trade and other businesses in Japan and wants to operate or manage the business. When the applicant wishes to operate or manage the above-mentioned business on behalf of a foreigner or a foreign corporation. The applicant has started the above-mentioned business in Japan or invested in the above-mentioned business in Japan.
	(a) The business establishments mentioned above must be located in Japan.	(b) The applicant is required to have ２ or more full-time employees who live in Japan work in addition to the applicant. Target audience: Japanese or permanent resident, Japanese spouse, permanent resident spouse, etc.
	Ⅲ. If the applicant is to engage in the management of a business as described above in Japan, he or she must have at least ３ years of practical experience in the operation and / or management of the business. However, the above period includes the period of learning at an educational institution.
